This new miniature iron-lung for new born babies was designed and built by EN Waterworth and in use in the Queen Victoria Hospital by 1940. A Launceston doctor contacted Waterworth as he had experienced frequent problems with breathing issues in new born babies and thought a machine to assist them breathing would help their survival. He tried to build his own using a vacuum cleaner as a vacuum but had problems with the valve component to develop a pulse. He sent his 'contraption' to Hobart for the Waterworth firm to examine and design and build a prototype that he could use
